1 TPD Small Palm Oil Refinery: Power, Space and Installation Requirements

When planning a small palm oil refinery, equipment price is only one part of the investment decision.

palm oil refinery

Before requesting a quotation, buyers should also understand the electrical requirement, building space, manufacturing schedule and site preparation needed for installation.

For a reference 1 TPD small palm oil refinery, the main planning figures are approximately 26.05 kW installed power, a 15 m × 6 m × 6 m building, about 90 working days for manufacturing and pre-assembly, and around 60 days for on-site installation.

These figures provide a starting point for project planning. The final configuration should be confirmed according to the actual crude oil, daily processing volume, site conditions, utilities and target products.

1. How much power does a 1 TPD palm oil refinery need?

A reference 1 TPD palm oil refinery has an installed load of about 26.05 kW.

The figure covers the main electrical equipment, including:

  • Vacuum system
  • Air compressor
  • Hot-oil circulation pumps
  • Kettle agitators
  • Feed and product pumps
  • Control and instrumentation

The installed load should not be confused with actual operating consumption. Not every motor operates at full load at the same time, so actual electricity consumption during operation is lower.

If an optional 500 kg/h oil expeller with integrated filter press is added, approximately 18.5 kW of additional installed power is required.

2. Electric heating or thermal-oil heating?

A 1 TPD small palm oil refinery can use two heating methods: electric heating or thermal-oil heating.

Electric heating can be straightforward for a site with a stable three-phase power supply.

For locations where the electrical grid is weak or unreliable, thermal-oil heating can be considered. It provides process heat through a heat-transfer-oil system rather than relying entirely on a stable electrical feed for the heating process.

This is one of the configuration points that should be discussed before equipment manufacturing.

3. How much building space is required?

The reference layout uses a building of approximately:

15 m × 6 m × 6 m

This corresponds to roughly 90 m² of floor space.

The covered bay can accommodate the main refining kettles, heat source, vacuum system and air compressor. Depending on the site, some auxiliary equipment such as the cooling tower and vacuum pump may be positioned outdoors.

A standard dimension should not automatically be treated as the final building drawing. The actual equipment arrangement should be checked against the buyer's site.

4. How long does the project take?

There are two different project periods.

Factory manufacturing

Manufacturing and pre-assembly take approximately 90 working days in the reference configuration.

On-site installation

On-site installation is approximately 60 days, including installation supervision, commissioning and operator training.

However, this schedule depends partly on whether the buyer has completed the required site preparation.

Foundations, lifting equipment, local welding and electrical work are normally part of the buyer's preparation scope.

Having these ready when the engineer arrives can help keep the installation schedule on track.

5. What should the buyer prepare?

Before installation, the site should be checked for:

Power

A three-phase supply suitable for approximately 26 kW installed load should be available for the reference refining unit.

Water

A small start-up water tank of approximately 2 m³ is referenced, together with a cooling pond or cooling tower.

Building

A covered area of approximately 15 m × 6 m × 6 m should be planned for the reference configuration.

Heating

The project should determine whether electric heating or thermal-oil heating is more appropriate.

Refining chemicals

The process requires materials such as caustic soda, phosphoric acid and bleaching earth.

Civil and installation support

Foundations, crane or hoisting equipment, local welding and electrical work should be prepared before installation.

6. Is a 1 TPD refinery suitable for a small business?

A 1 TPD batch refinery can be considered when the project has an oil throughput of around one ton per day and is not yet ready for continuous-scale production.

Its relatively compact layout can also be useful when land or building space is limited.

Another advantage of batch processing is flexibility. Different crude oils can be processed in separate batches, depending on the equipment configuration and production plan.

On the other hand, businesses handling larger and more stable volumes may need to evaluate semi-continuous or fully continuous refining systems.

The decision should therefore be based on more than nominal capacity. Raw material availability, target refined products, utilities, site conditions, operating pattern and future expansion should all be considered.

7. What happens if the power supply is unreliable?

This is an important issue for many small refinery projects.

A stable three-phase supply is assumed for the 26 kW reference configuration. Where voltage dips or power interruptions are common, the project may need a suitable stabilisation or generator solution, or the heating system may be configured around thermal-oil heating.

The exact generator and stabiliser rating should be confirmed according to the complete equipment configuration and local electrical conditions.

8. What should be confirmed before ordering?

Before requesting the final configuration, buyers should prepare at least:

  • Crude oil type
  • Expected daily oil volume
  • Building dimensions
  • Local power condition
  • Water availability
  • Target refined-oil specification
  • Heating preference or power limitations
  • Installation conditions

This information allows the supplier to check the connected load, heating method, equipment layout and installation schedule more accurately.

Conclusion

For a 1 TPD small palm oil refinery, early project planning should include more than equipment price.

A reference configuration requires about 26.05 kW installed power, approximately 15 × 6 × 6 m of building space, around 90 working days for factory manufacturing, and approximately 60 days for on-site installation.

These are project-planning reference figures rather than universal values. The final equipment configuration should be confirmed according to the actual project conditions.

20 TPD Palm Oil Refinery in Cameroon: Batch vs. Semi-Continuous

Planning a 20 TPD palm oil refinery in Cameroon? One of the key decisions before selecting equipment is whether to use a batch refinery or a semi-continuous refinery.

At this capacity, the practical comparison is generally between these two configurations rather than a full-continuous refinery.

The important point is that the final choice should not be made from capacity alone. CPO supply, production schedule, crude oil type, refined-oil requirements, utilities, site conditions and future expansion plans can all affect the appropriate configuration.

palm oil refinery

What Does Semi-Continuous Mean for a 20 TPD Refinery?

A semi-continuous refinery combines batch-operated stages with a continuous section.

In the configuration described for a 20 TPD project, degumming, deacidification and bleaching can be operated in batches, while deodorization is carried out continuously through a deodorizing tower.

This is different from a full-continuous refinery where all stages would operate continuously.

Glory Oiltech (Henan Glory)'s current refinery range provides a useful product-design reference:

  • Batch systems: 1–20 TPD
  • Semi-continuous systems: 5–30 TPD
  • Full-continuous systems: from 30 TPD

These ranges are product-design references rather than universal industry standards.

Therefore, a 20 TPD plant can be considered for either batch or semi-continuous refining depending on its actual requirements.

Batch vs. Semi-Continuous: What Is Different?

Refining Stages

A batch refinery performs degumming, deacidification, bleaching and deodorization batch by batch in tanks.

A semi-continuous refinery can operate degumming, deacidification and bleaching in batches while using continuous deodorization.

Production Schedule

If the plant will operate with changing production schedules or process different crude oils in rotation, the flexibility of batch operation can be relevant.

A semi-continuous configuration is better suited to a more regular production schedule because its continuous deodorization section operates as part of an integrated process.

Deodorization

The deodorization section is one of the clearest differences.

A batch system uses a deodorization tank.

A semi-continuous system uses a continuous deodorizing tower.

Heating and Heat Utilization

For a 20 TPD batch refinery, the thermal oil heating option is applicable.

A semi-continuous configuration can use a plate heat exchanger to transfer heat from high-temperature refined oil after deodorization to incoming cold oil.

This is part of the different heat-utilization approach between the two configurations.

FFA Recovery

If FFA recovery is required, this should be confirmed during project planning.

A dedicated FFA recovery system is not part of the standard batch configuration described for this refinery.

A semi-continuous configuration can include an FFA capturing and recovery system during continuous deodorization.

Plant Arrangement

A batch refinery has a relatively compact equipment arrangement with lower building requirements for a small-scale refinery.

A semi-continuous system requires a more integrated arrangement to connect the batch and continuous sections and their supporting systems.

How Should You Choose the Configuration?

Before selecting equipment, look at the actual project.

1. CPO Supply

Will CPO be available regularly, or will supply vary during the year?

Raw-material availability affects how consistently the refinery can operate.

2. Production Schedule

Will the refinery operate occasionally, by batch, or on a regular daily schedule?

The operating schedule should match the refinery configuration.

3. Crude Oil Types

Will the plant process only palm oil, or may different crude oils be processed at different times?

Different raw materials may require greater flexibility in production and process control.

4. Refined-Oil Requirements

What quality specifications should the refined palm oil meet?

Product requirements can affect the refining process and equipment configuration.

5. Utilities

Check what electricity, steam, water, heating and cooling resources are available at the site.

Utility availability can affect the heating and supporting systems selected for the refinery.

6. Site Conditions

How much space is available for the refinery and supporting equipment?

Available space can influence equipment arrangement and plant layout.

7. Future Expansion

Is the plant expected to remain at 20 TPD, or could production increase later?

Future plans should be considered before finalizing the equipment configuration.

Capacity Alone Does Not Determine the Configuration

Project experience also shows why refinery configuration should not be determined by capacity alone.

Glory Oiltech (Henan Glory) has supplied a 10 TPD batch-type palm oil refinery and fractionation project in Kenya.

A customer in Venezuela purchased 30 TPD semi-continuous refining equipment for palm oil and soybean oil.

For a 20 TPD palm oil refinery in Cameroon, the practical next step is therefore to match the configuration with the actual project conditions.

What Information Should You Prepare?

Before requesting a quotation, prepare:

  • CPO characteristics
  • Expected production schedule
  • Refined-oil quality requirements
  • Available utilities
  • Site space
  • Automation requirements
  • Future expansion plans

These details can affect the final refinery configuration and equipment selection.

Final Consideration

For a 20 TPD palm oil refinery in Cameroon, both batch and semi-continuous configurations can be considered.

The choice depends on the production schedule, CPO supply, refining requirements and future plans for the plant.

Instead of choosing a configuration based only on capacity, evaluate the complete project conditions first.

Sell CPO or Build a Palm Oil Refinery? How to Make the Right Investment Decision

If you already operate a palm oil mill and produce crude palm oil (CPO), downstream refining may eventually become an investment option.

But should you continue selling CPO, or should you build a palm oil refinery?

The answer depends on the stage of your business.

A refinery can create an opportunity to capture more value from CPO, but it also requires additional investment, utilities, operation, maintenance and management. Therefore, the first question should not simply be whether refining is better than selling CPO.

The more useful question is:

Is your existing CPO business ready for downstream investment?

Sell CPO or Build a Palm Oil Refinery?

When Should You Consider a Palm Oil Refinery?

A palm oil refinery is worth considering when you have both a reliable CPO supply and a clear opportunity to sell refined products.

Several factors should be evaluated together.

Stable CPO Supply

Your existing palm oil mill should be able to provide a reasonably stable supply of CPO for downstream processing.

Consider how much CPO your mill can produce and whether the supply remains relatively stable throughout the year.

You should also consider whether production is expected to increase or whether additional CPO will need to be purchased from outside suppliers.

Downstream Market

Having CPO available is not enough.

Before investing in a refinery, you should identify customers, sales channels or a target market for the refined products.

If refined-oil demand has not yet been validated, investing in additional processing capacity can introduce unnecessary market risk.

Value-Added Potential

Refining involves additional equipment, utilities, operation and maintenance.

The additional value from refined products therefore needs to justify these extra costs.

The investment should be evaluated as a complete business case rather than based only on the potential selling price of refined oil.

Business Development

Some CPO producers want to move beyond bulk CPO sales and develop downstream products.

In this situation, refining can become part of a broader business-development strategy.

However, the company also needs to be prepared for the additional management, sales and operational requirements.

When Is Selling CPO Still a Practical Option?

Building a refinery does not have to be the immediate next step after establishing a CPO mill.

Selling CPO may still be more suitable when the existing business is still being developed.

For example, the priority may currently be to stabilize production, raw material supply and existing operations.

The same applies when refined-oil sales have not been confirmed, the expected added value is limited, or available capital has more immediate uses within the existing CPO operation.

In these situations, the business can continue developing its current operation and reconsider downstream refining when the investment case becomes stronger.

What Should You Do Before Investing?

Once the business case for downstream refining becomes clearer, do not immediately select a refinery model.

Start with the products you want to produce.

You may want to sell refined palm oil to bulk buyers or packaged edible oil markets. Depending on the target market, you may also consider further fractionation to produce palm olein and palm stearin.

The target products will influence the refinery configuration.

Determine Capacity From the Project

Refinery capacity should be determined from the actual project rather than simply selecting a standard capacity offered by a supplier.

Consider:

How much CPO can your existing mill supply?
How stable is the supply?
Is CPO production expected to increase?
Will additional CPO be purchased?
How much refined product does your target market require?

The selected capacity should reflect available CPO, expected utilization and market demand.

Glory Oiltech (Henan Glory) has palm oil refining and fractionation project experience across different capacities, including a 5 TPD palm oil physical refinery plant in Indonesia, a 100 TPD palm oil refinery and fractionation plant in Kenya, and a 5 TPD palm oil refinery and fractionation plant in Nigeria.

These projects also demonstrate why refinery capacity needs to be evaluated according to the actual project requirements.

Compare the Complete Project, Not Just Equipment Prices

When discussing a refinery project with a supplier, avoid asking only:

“How much does a palm oil refinery cost?”

Instead, provide your actual business information and ask for a project-based evaluation.

Useful questions include:

Is the proposed capacity suitable for my CPO supply?
What refined products can the proposed refinery produce?
What existing infrastructure can be reused?
What utilities are required?
What equipment and services are included?
What is excluded from the quotation?
What information is still needed to finalize the proposal?

This makes it easier to compare solutions according to the needs of your business.

What Should a Palm Oil Refinery Quotation Include?

A quotation should be reviewed according to its scope.

Check whether the price covers only the main refining equipment or also includes supporting systems and project services.

Depending on the project, you may need to clarify storage, utilities, installation, commissioning, piping, electrical work, transportation, spare parts and after-sales support.

Most importantly, compare quotations with the same project scope.

A lower equipment price does not necessarily represent a lower total project investment if important requirements are excluded.

Physical Refinery or Refinery With Fractionation?

A physical refinery is designed to refine crude palm oil into refined products.

Adding fractionation provides a further separation step and can produce products such as palm olein and palm stearin.

The appropriate configuration depends on the products you plan to sell and the requirements of your target market.

palm olein and palm stearin

What Information Should You Prepare?

You do not need to have every project detail finalized before speaking with a supplier.

However, it is useful to prepare:

Current CPO source and approximate supply
Target refined products
Expected market or sales channels
Available site and utilities
Existing storage facilities
Expected project timeline

This information can help the supplier understand your project and identify which details still need to be confirmed.

Final Consideration

If you already produce CPO, the decision to build a palm oil refinery should be based on whether the downstream opportunity is strong enough to justify the additional investment and operation.

If your business is ready, define the target products, determine the capacity from the actual CPO supply and market demand, and compare complete project scopes before selecting a refinery solution.

If you are still developing your CPO business or have not yet confirmed the downstream opportunity, continuing to sell CPO and reassessing refining later can also be considered.

Glory Oiltech (Henan Glory) can help CPO producers evaluate a suitable palm oil refining solution based on actual CPO supply, target products, capacity and project conditions.
